Symmetry and topology are two areas of mathematics that have had an outsized effect on our understanding of crystalline solids. Symmetry is the study of the rotations and reflections we can do that leave our description of a material unchanged, while topology is the study of studies properties that remain unchanged when a material is distorted in some way. In this talk, Prof. Bradlyn will describe progress in his research group towards using symmetry and topology to understand electrical properties of quantum materials.
