Air pollution and maternal stress during pregnancy are both risk factors for autism spectrum disorder. However, the biological mechanisms by which these exposures lead to autism-relevant behavioral deficits in offspring remain unknown. This seminar will discuss work suggesting that both the gut microbiome and microglia - the resident immune cells of the brain - may be critical players in this developmental response.
