From the three-body problem to the butterfly effect, chaos is one of the most mathematically fascinating yet tangible phenomena in nature. Chaos in the classical world has been (more or less) well understood and formulated in the language of dynamical systems, but its quantum counterpart remains elusive — even its definition is not clear despite decades of efforts. Recent attempts to characterize quantum chaos using tools/concepts from classical chaos have seen partial success, and in this talk we will review a selective subset of these tools, including the quantum Lyapunov exponent and the quantum Kolmogorov-Sinai (KS) entropy. We will discuss their advantages and drawbacks in diagnosing quantum chaos, and present some preliminary ideas of a more proper definition of the quantum KS entropy that is designed to probe the information loss in a quantum many-body system.

The Zoom link will be sent to the Graduate Student and PDRA mailing lists. If you are not on one of those lists and are interested in attending, please email Mark Hirsbrunner at hrsbrnn2@illinois.edu for the link.
