Writer-director François Ozon is the latest featured speaker for the Marianne Midwest series of discussions on contemporary topics. Ozon is a prolific, award-winning French film-maker known for tackling challenging political topics and for experimenting with genre cinema conventions. His credits include See the Sea, Under the Sand, 8 Women, In the House, Swimming Pool, Potiche, and Frantz. His newest release, By the Grace of God, won the Silver Bear at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival. Ozon will discuss By the Grace of God, the real-life fights against the silencing of child abuse within the French Catholic Church that inspired the film, and the complex relationship between filmmaking and the social and human realities that it depicts. Following his talk, he will be joined by Jennifer Wild, Associate Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago, for a discussion and audience Q&A. The event will be video-cast in real time and audience members in Urbana will have the opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A.
