Join us for the first Dish It Up of the semester as we welcome Claire Branigan, a doctoral student in linguistic and cultural anthropology for her talk "La Marea Verde: Lessons from Argentina’s “Green Tide” and the Emergence of a New Transnational Feminist Movement "

This past August, feminist activists in Argentina made history as a bill to legalize/decriminalize abortion was voted on for the first time. Although the bill failed in the senate, it was nonetheless a massive victory for the Argentine, and greater Latin American, feminist movement(s). This talk will contextualize the historic bill for the legalization of abortion within Argentina’s larger feminist movement that was born out of the #NiUnaMenos (not one woman less) movement against femicide in 2015. Drawing upon long-term ethnographic research, this talk will show the ways in which Argentine activists have mobilized feminist theory in creative and performative ways that have challenged structural forms of sexism and misogyny. Further, it will highlight some of the ways in which the Argentine movement aligns and contrasts with #MeToo in the United States. By looking to Argentina and Latin America broadly, this talk will explore a solidarity-based, and transnational approach for feminist movement building in the Americas.
