TITLE: "Current-Sourced Hybrid Switched-Capacitor Converter for Data Center Applications"
ABSTRACT: We present the design of a hybrid switched-capacitor converter (HSCC) for data center 48-V point-of-load (PoL) applications. The earlier HSCCs attained high-power density and high-efficiency conversion but, faced limitations at the chip-level integration due to the reliance on magnetics as the output filter. Our proposed design of an HSCC with a current-sourced input stage does not deploy magnetics at the output. The restricted utilization of magnetics to the input allows the design implementation as a system-on-chip (SoC), with the externally connected magnetics at a low-current node. We built a 48-V to 6-V experimental hardware prototype and present results that indicate a peak efficiency of 91.9 %.
