TITLE: "Voltage and Frequency Control for Grid-Forming Inverter-Based Microgrids"

WHEN: Monday, December 6, 2021, 3:00 – 3:50 p.m.

WHERE: ECEB 4070 and via Zoom (contact Robin Smith for information)

ABSTRACT: Grid-forming inverters (GFMs) are a promising technology to replace synchronous generators to maintain system voltage and frequency in microgrids with low inertia. Among the primary control actions that GFMs can provide include droop, virtual synchronous machine replacements and dispatchable virtual oscillators (dVOCs). The focus of this presentation is on dVOCs. We present a power-flow model of a three-bus microgrid with a dVOC-based inverter at each bus accompanied by a reduced-order dynamical model with a distributed slack bus. We describe a proposed secondary-control architecture for frequency regulation and voltage support. Such an architecture advances beyond the frequency control only provision by GFMs with the addition of secondary voltage control in order to improve stability in microgrids with deeper penetrations of renewable resources.
