Associate Professor Joohyung Kim

Presentation Title:  Introduction of KIMLAB (Kinetic Intelligent Machine LAB)

Abstract:  In this talk, I will share what is going on in KIMLAB, Kinetic Intelligent Machine LAB. First, I will briefly talk about my previous works before joining UIUC, then I will introduce some robots, research, and equipment in KIMLAB. Also, I will explain how the current efforts are related to my previous research and future directions.

Bio:  Joohyung Kim is currently an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on design and control for humanoid robots, systems for motion learning in robot hardware, and safe human-robot interaction. He received BSE and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) from Seoul National University, Korea. Prior to joining UIUC, He was a Research Scientist in Disney Research doing research for animation character robots.

Presentation Title:  What is a Qubit? – An Introduction to Quantum Information Science

Abstract:  From computers to smartphones, technology provides powerful ways to store and transmit information. However, there are limitations to the speed and storage capacity of these devices. To study these fundamental limits, scientists model information in terms of “bits’’ that are encoded into different configurations of a physical system.

Recently, scientists have begun to investigate the possibility of encoding information within the subatomic world of quantum mechanics, where bits of information are now called “quantum bits”, or qubits. The mysterious properties of quantum mechanics allow for new computing and communication methods that can surpass certain limitations of current technology.

In this talk I will introduce some of the basic principles of qubits and describe how they are used in quantum computing.  I will then discuss some of the exciting current research opportunities in quantum information theory.

Bio:   Eric Chitambar received his B.S. degree in physics from the University of Notre Dame in 2005 and his Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Michigan in 2010 under the direction of Prof. Yaoyun Shi. He served as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Toronto and later at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada. In 2012, Dr. Chitambar became a member of the physics department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and in 2018 he joined the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as an Associate Professor. His research interests include the LOCC processing of quantum information, entanglement theory, and general quantum resource theories.  Outside of science, some of his interests include rock music, tropical fish keeping, and philosophy.
