This presentation is focused on MPR’s ongoing role as independent technical advisors for an island nation located in the Caribbean as it moves towards a net zero carbon footprint. In recent years, the Island government adopted energy policies that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, namely by reducing fossil fuel consumed for electricity generation. The Island implemented several projects that were intended to make energy generation sources “greener”; some of these include the addition of renewable, inverter-based generation (i.e., wind and solar farms), the addition of more efficient reciprocating engine generation, and the decommissioning of old, polluting and less efficient power units. In the recent months following these changes, the island experienced several blackouts of durations ranging from about two to eight hours and two partial load sheds of shorter duration. This talk will discuss some of the specific issues with integrating inverter-based sources of generation with existing transmission and distribution systems and the path towards resolving them.
