In recent years, there appears to be an observable change happening regarding religiosity in Turkey. According to a survey conducted in 2018, in 10 years the proportion of Turks who reported no religious preference tripled. Although this is an important change, it becomes more interesting when considering the swing towards non-belief and/or decrease in religiously is mainly taking place among the people who previously considered themselves religious or devoted. Ruled by a conservative Justice and Development Party since 2002, this change in religious atmosphere is most surprising. Through in-depth interviews and study of media accounts, I seek to find answers why this unexpected change happened, and what might its implication be for Turkish politics as well as Turkish Islam’s experience with secularism.
