By imagining Indigenous peoples in varying futures, we inherently disrupt notions of them as only belonging to a pre-history and thus Indigenous futurisms counteracts the supposed “Native disappearance” integral to the myth of the vanishing Indian. Indigenous futurisms take up issues of dislocation, genocide, colonialism, and “manifest destiny,” as a way of grappling with historical trauma and current issues by directing our own futures.
