The ARTD 595 Graduate students invite you to their exhibition of work, titled Nepantla in the Bloc Gallery from 12:00-1:00pm on Wednesday, April 17. The exhibition will remain on display through April 21.

Nepantla refers to the feeling of inhabiting the created boundaries at the encounter between worlds. These 'seeing double' allows us to see cultures transparent and removed from their center (Andaluza, 2002). From that in-betweenness the exhibit explores the controversy surrounding the adoption and retirement of a Native American character as part of the imagery around sports at the University of Illinois, seeking to present forms of racialized design as experiences of reality from particular perspectives, in specific time and place.

We expect this to allow a contemplation of the context that shapes our understandings as well as the myths that construct our identities. Anzaldúa, Gloria E. “now let us shift...the path of conocimiento...inner work, publicacts.” this bridge we call home: radical visions for transformation.

Ed. Gloria E.Anzaldúa and AnaLouise Keating. NewYork: Routledge, 2002. 540-78.
