Abstract: Mohandas or "Mahatma" Gandhi (1869-1948) may have been the 20th century's best known Hindu, but he also engaged intimately with Christianity, Islam and Buddhism.  The talk by Rajmohan Gandhi, a grandson of the Mahatma as also one of his biographers, will address (1) Gandhi's views on relations between faiths and faith communities, (2) how Gandhi ensured that independent India, born in the trauma of partition and great violence between non-Muslims (Hindus and Sikhs) and Muslims, pursued reconciliation and offered equal rights to people of all faiths, and (3) the significant rejection of Gandhi's ideas in India in recent years.

Bio: Rajmohan Gandhi is the biographer and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. He is also a research professor at the University of Illinois Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. He continues the work of his grandfather, trying to bring the world together through understanding and cooperation. Since September 11, 2001, he has addressed the issues between the West and the world of Islam.  He also serves as Academic Director of the Global Crossroads International Living/Learning Community.
