Abstract: Did the Romans value diversity, and if so, on what grounds? Though Latin writers rarely discussed such questions explicitly, this paper argues via Ovid's Ars Amatoria and Pliny's Natural History that they placed economic, aesthetic, and pragmatic value on ethnic and geographical variety. However, their tendency to commodify and tokenize humans exposes some problems with the way we discuss and ‘do’ diversity, especially at American universities.
