Dr. Igor Lavrov : "New Age of Neuromodulation: Restoration of Motor Control after Spinal Cord Injury.”

Abstract: This talk focuses on the development of spinal cord neuromodulation therapy for restoration of motor functions in spinal cord injured patients. It will cover over the twenty years course of research, conducted by Dr. Lavrov and his colleagues at the University of Louisville (studies on sensorimotor integration in the spinal cord), at UCLA and Pavlov Institute of Physiology (on developing new methods for reactivation of neuronal circuits with electrical stimulation and pharmacological interventions), and at the Kazan Federal University and at the Mayo Clinic on restoration of volitional motor control in subjects with spinal cord injury with epidural electrical stimulation.

Short Bio: Dr. Lavrov is an assistant professor at the Mayo Clinic, with appointments in the departments of biomedical engineering and neurosurgery. He received his M.D. in Medicine (Neurology) from the Military Medical Academy (Russia) and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Pavlov Institute of Physiology, Russian Academy of Sciences. After completing Postdoctoral Research Fellowships at the University of Louisville and at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), he was junior faculty at UCLA and also completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Deep Brain Stimulation and Neuromodulation at the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic. His research interests are primarily focused on neuronal circuits, their modulation, reorganization, and repair after traumatic injury.
