The CEE 449 class is a design class for upperclassmen students in civil and environmental engineering. This class challenges students to create water treatment solutions for developing communities. This year, the class partnered with the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Students travelled to Uganda, interacted with the community, and analyzed water samples with lab techniques both in the field and at UIUC to inform the final recommendations. Since this community already has an operational drinking water plant, the students designed changes for the treatment system that improve the product water quality, decrease energy demands, and meet the socio-economic needs of the community. This presentation is a summary of the students’ observations in the settlement, analysis of treatment options, and final recommendations.
