Russian, E. European & Eurasian Center: Co-sponsored Events

University of Illinois graduate students who are pursuing a degree in the area of Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies are invited to participate in the pedagogical workshop dedicated to the issues of race, diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion as we encounter them in the classroom in our field. The workshop is organized by Prof. Eugene Avrutin, Prof. Valeria Sobol, and Dr. Rachel Stauffer as part of the 2021-22 research cluster “Russia and the Global Color line,” funded by the Humanities Research Institute. The workshop will be held on Friday, February 4th, 2022, 2-4 pm (location TBD). This will be a two-part event: during the first hour (in the format of a “lightning round”), each participant will briefly (in 3-4 minutes) present an example they have encountered in the classroom as teachers and/or students, relevant to the theme of the workshop (e.g., a poem, a problematic language textbook example, an excerpt from a literary or historical source, a real-life situation with the student body in the class, etc.). During the second hour, participants will reflect on these situations and discuss possible solutions. A short secondary reading or two will be assigned for the second hour to frame the discussion.

If you are interested in participating, please send a short, 2-3 sentence abstract, stating your interest and describing what you would like to present, to Prof. Valeria Sobol (vsobol@illinois.edu) by January 14th.  We anticipate having 10 participants and are currently planning to hold the workshop as an in-person event with refreshments during the break. We will, of course, monitor the pandemic situation closely and will switch to a virtual format if necessary. Participants from any REES disciplines are welcome.
