Join us Sunday, January 17 at 4pm as we present our first Japan House Shares for 2021, featuring Sumi Demae with Lindsey Stirek, Assistant Director of Academic Programming (Professor Emeritus Shozo Sato). Lindsey will be performing a shozumi demonstration followed by a simple usucha honoring Professor Emeritus Kimiko Gunji.

We will be offering both an online, and in-person (limited, ticketed) event. Starting at 12pm, we have cultivated four individual hours of entertainment featuring a selection of martial arts, cultural arts, dance and Japanese tea ceremonies. Each hour is unique and will feature different groups from the area.

If you like deliberative talking, mirth, and music, then this is the evening for you. Topics will include, but not be limited to: beef, comportment, eggs, bacon, pork, breakfast, barbecue, steak, meat, and Illinois Kabuki Theatre. If the evening is light on dance, the audience has only themselves to blame. Ticket proceeds support Japan House!

Japan House is proud to be a participating garden in the North American Japanese Garden Association's Gardens for Peace (G4P) project. Japan House is offering outside garden tours featuring the unique pattern for peace raked in the dry rock garden. We hope that guests will appreciate the facets of the gardens that are meant to evoke peace and tranquility.

Japan House offers the opportunity for guests to celebrate autumn together in the beauty of the gardens with a special tea ceremony to honor the Harvest Moon followed by a special shakuhachi performance by the ponds near Japan House. Note: Japan House will NOT be open to the public during Tsukimi. Activities will take place outside so plan accordingly.

Japan House's annual Fall Open House resumes on Saturday, October 14th featuring Linda Mosley, artist and teacher of ceramics and chado. Traditional Japanese tea ceremonies will be offered at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, and 2pm. At 3pm, Linda Mosley will be giving a free presentation about ceramics in tea ceremony. Registration required for all activities.

Japan House will be open from 12–4pm for Homecoming on Friday, October 20. Stop by and have a bowl of tea and Illini-themed sweet at our Homecoming Matcha Café, browse our Mottainai Bazaar goods, and enjoy the gardens! There is no formal tea ceremony offered but guests will be able to still enjoy a bowl of matcha and a sweet. Walk-ins welcome but reservations preferred!

To celebrate Hinamatsuri this year, Japan House is holding two special sessions with activities highlighting ways that Hinamatsuri is enjoyed. Space is limited to 22 people per session. All guests must have a registered ticket to enter due to limited space inside.
