In this talk, Dr.Reily will present the collected volume Musicar Local – trajetórias para a ethnomusicologia (Local Musicking – trajectories for ethnomusicology), produced by members of the research collective within the FAPESP-funded framework project “Local Musicking.” The project, which lasted for six and a half years, was based at universities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. During that time, around 80 researchers of diverse academic levels in the fields of Ethnomusicology, Anthropology, and Music Studies were affiliated to the project, each engaging in an individual ethnographic investigation of a musical context. In the final year of the project, the active participants were divided into teams representing common thematic interests, and each team was tasked with the job of producing a theoretical chapter, drawing on the ethnographic material of their individual studies. Following a general overview of the volume, Dr.Reily will zoom in on Chapter 10, “Espaços, política e musicar local” (Spaces, politics, and local musicking), which presents a model for investigating political dimensions of local musical activity.
