The YWCA Community Read is an opportunity for individuals to read and share their own experiences through discussion, poetry, and song. For this October and November, the Asian American Cultural Center and the YWCA jointly chose "When the Emperor Was Divine" by Julia Otsuka. The book recounts a family's experiences being uprooted and sent to a Japanese American internment camp, set up by the U.S. government following the attack on Pearl Harbor. There will be moderated discussions at the local community libraries and the Asian American Cultural Center. The Community Read will offer vital historical insights into today's American xenophobia and authoritarianism.
