Title: How do we find Supermassive black hole binaries through optical variability?
Abstract:
The hierarchical structure formation paradigm suggests that the supermassive black hole binaries(SMBHB) should exist. While the formation of SMBHBs is inevitable, direct evidence has so far been elusive. Because of the small separation of the bounded SMBHBs, direct imaging with a large sample is almost impossible; we need to rely on other indirect methods to find those objects systematically. I will talk about the project I have been working on -- finding SMBHBs through optical variability and show some candidates we found with Dark Energy Survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
