This is a white paper written by Lauren Chambers for the 2020 Decadal Survey, and we will use it to motivate our discussion on why it is important to create more diverse astronomy departments. There is also attached part of the AAS Task Force on Diversity final report. In particular, this section details the AAS recommendations for astronomy departments seeking to create more diverse and equitable graduate programs.
