Title: From Nanomaterials to Pharmaceuticals: Evaluating the Potential Impacts of Emerging Contiminants in Freshwater Systems

Emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and some pesticides, have been found in freshwater systems worldwide. In addition, new classes of chemicals such as nanomaterials are increasing in production and are anticipated to become just as prevalent. By in large the impact of these chemicals in the environment is unknown. Many studies indicate that concentrations that are higher than what is found in the environment can be harmful but the effects at realistic doses can be difficult to characterize. This talk will describe research into the effects of low-dose chronic exposures to a variety of emerging contaminants and how genomic technologies may provide a key to determining their potential environmental impact with respect to other environmental stressors.

Dr. Rebecca D. Klaper is a Shaw Associate Professor at the School of Freshwater Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Director of the Great Lakes Genomics Center whose mission is to use genomic tools to support environmental research. Dr. Klaper studies the potential impact of emerging contaminants, such as nanoparticles and pharmaceuticals on aquatic life and how we may design these chemicals to have the least environmental impact. In addition she examines the transport of these chemicals through the wastewater treatment systems and into the environment and how different treatment technologies may remove them from the waste stream. Dr. Klaper received a AAAS-Science and Technology Policy Fellowship where she worked in the National Center for Environmental Assessment at the U.S. Enviromental Protection Agency. She has served as an invited scientific expert to both the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative and the international Organization for Economic and Cooperative Development panel on nanotechnology where she has testified on the potential impact of nanoparticles on the environment and the utility of current testing strategies. She has also served as a technical expert to the Alliance for the Great Lakes and the International Joint Commission regarding the potential impacts of pharmaceuticals and personal care products and other emerging contaminants on the Great Lakes. She has served as a technical expert in reviewing the EPA White Paper on the environmental impact of nanotechnologies and the EPA research strategy for nanotechnology. She also was involved in writing the EPA White Paper on the use of genomic technologies in risk assessment. She currently serves on the National Research Council Panel to Develop a Research Strategy for Environmental, Health, and Safety Aspects of Engineered Nanomaterials. Dr. Klaper received her Ph.D. in Ecology from the Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, her M.S. in Entomology from UGS  and her B.S. in Honors Biology at University of Illinois.
