About the Speaker
Silvia Federici is a feminist activist, teacher and writer. Born and raised in Italy, since the late 1960s she has lived in the United States where she has studied philosophy and later taught in various universities. In the 1970s, she was one of the founders of the International Campaign for Wages for Housework and the New York Wages For Housework Committee. In the early 1980s, over a period of three years she also taught courses in the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria and has since lectured at universities in many countries of Europe and Latin America. She was also one of the founders of the Committee for Academic Freedom in Africa and, in the 1990s, the Radical Philosophers’Anti-Death Penalty Project.
She is the author of books and essays on women's history and feminist theory, political philosophy and education. Her published works include: Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation, now published 20 languages.
