A symposium organized by Lilya Kaganovsky (Slavic/Comparative & World Literature/ Media & Cinema Studies), Anna Stenport (Germanic Languages & Literatures/Media & Cinema Studies), and Julie Turnock (Media & Cinema Studies) in collaboration with the Unit for Criticism & Interpretive Theory.

This symposium will bring together film, media, and cinema scholars from Europe and the United States, working on a range of topics relating to film technology. Drawing on the definition of "texture" as "touch; appearance, finish, surface, grain; quality, consistency; weave," questions addressed at this symposium are expected to include the following: How are technologies used to bring forth a sense of film texture? How do film technology and aesthetics interact as a "textural" practice? What aspects of technology as material practice have particular resonance for creating texture, whether in digital or analog formats? How can specific elements of sound technology, editing, production design, costume, visual effects, illusion of motion, layering, or landscape portrayal help us conceive of a texture in relation to film?
