Junior Faculty Seminar Series: Best Practices to Improve Student Learning

Come join this learning community by participating in this specially designed seminar series for junior faculty, though all are welcomed to participate. We'll share strategies and best practices for effective and efficient teaching. There will be great conversations, handouts, and lunch! Since each session builds on each other, we hope you will be able to attend all the meetings.

When we start designing our more traditional face-to-face courses, we typically implement a backward design where we identify the critical learning goals or outcomes, determine the acceptable evidence (through exams, projects, presentations, etc.), and then plan the learning experiences where students can learn and practice the necessary skills and knowledge. 


In designing an online course, we should start with the same pedagogical framework of course design. In addition, the same critical components of engagement, motivation, clear communication and explanation, and, yes, even active learning can be achieved in an online environment by maximizing the available technology-enhanced tools.  This session will highlight the strategies of our invited professors (Jose Vazquez (ECON), Wendy Yang (IB), and Joanne Manaster (IB) who have successfully implemented (or modified) the best practices of their face-to-face courses to their online courses.
