Slam Latina poet Melissa Lozada-Oliva’s spoken poem “My Spanish” documents personal tensions stemming from her limited proficiency in Spanish. Indeed, the Pew Hispanic Center reports that 37% of Latinos ages 5 to 17 speak only English at home. Dual language is a public school model that teaches in Spanish anywhere from half to 90% of the school day, and has been shown to result in higher levels of Spanish, academic achievement, and even English. After sharing Spanish proficiency data from two Chicago area dual language schools, I discuss the potential of this model in promoting intergenerational language maintenance.
