Abstract: The seminar focus is on oil and gas pipeline transmission infrastructure cybersecurity and “resiliency,” the ability to overcome challenges from cyber-physical disruptions and operational problems, as well as the ability of the system to return the pipeline infrastructure to operational status within reasonable time. The presentation will explain how oil and gas pipeline transmission infrastructures are physically designed and how operational technology is integrated to operate the systems. Secondly, I will discuss the operational requirements considering the regulatory aspect of those decisions on pipeline transmission and system resiliency. The goal of the presentation is to provide a better understanding of pipeline infrastructure design considering regulatory requirements, a better understanding of how SCADA and digital systems interact with actual pipeline operations, and to explore their impact on concerns for cybersecurity, challenges, and research focus.
Bio: Al Rivero is the President of ANG Consulting, a firm that specializes in helping clients develop strategic technology and growth plans. This includes the development of long-term (3 to 5 years) strategic technology plans to ensure reliable and secure migration of technologies. He also works with development companies to ensure alignment with industry expectations for platform use. Al has more than 30 years of energy industry experience having held various positions ranging from staff engineer, project manager, operations management, technology management to managing Chevron’s regulatory strategy group focusing on developing CVX-wide strategy for addressing energy-related regulatory issues and assisting key stakeholders with assuring compliance with regulatory requirements. He has extensive IT/OT integration project experience SAP, JDE OneWorld, as well as several Honeywell and Foxboro DCS system installations at chemical plants and refineries. Al has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Cal State Fullerton and a Bachelor of Science degree in computational mathematics from the University of California Irvine. He has authored or co-authored a variety of papers on critical infrastructure protection for API, AGA, and DOE and has worked with DOE and DHS on critical infrastructure protection planning.
