Community Networking with Clowder and Unity 3D

Colter Wehmeier, PhD Student, Informatics

Abstract: The People’s Tree is a month-long social experiment using Unity 3D as a user interface and Clowder as a network backend. Participants design ornaments, bundle comments, and submit to a single tree. This presentation covers the foundational work of making the installation, its challenges, success, and how its toolset brings new kinds of research opportunities to the table.

Bio: Colter Wehmeier is an Informatics PhD Student at the University of Illinois, with concentration in Arts and Culture. He develops tools for exchanging data between Clowder and Unity3D, a videogame engine with the capacity to visualize and extend the dynamic hosting capabilities of Clowder. His research focuses on design for healthier online communities, and new kinds of participatory media.
