All are invited to attend the Astronomy Colloquium on Tuesday, April 30 at 3:45pm in the NCSA auditorium to hear from Charles Gammie, Illinois professor of Physics and Astronomy. A research team led by Dr. Gammie used both Blue Waters and XSEDE resources when laying the groundwork in the imaging of the M87 black hole.
Abstract: On April 10, the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration released the first images of the 6 billion solar mass black hole in the nucleus of M87. Dr. Gammie will review the results and discuss the physical interpretation of the images. In particular, he will discuss implications for the spin of the M87 black hole, and for our understanding of how extragalactic radio jets are launched. Dr. Gammie will also discuss what we can expect from EHT in the near future.
