Animal movements are an issue of long-standing interest among biologists because they can have fundamental effects on demography and extinction, and even lead to allopatric diversification and the formation of novel species. Birds are generally considered to be among the most vagile of taxa, and although many avian species are capable of incredible feats of long-distance flight (which is on our mind, as migration is just around the corner!), other species, especially in the tropics, are dispersal limited. Our talk focuses on the social behavior and genomics of the White-breasted Thrasher, an exceptionally sedentary tropical bird.
