Fish recruitment is linked to three important characteristics: age-specific growth (G’), mortality (M’), and dispersal. However, hydrological variation is believed to be the major abiotic factor influencing recruitment in floodplain ecosystems. I examined long-term recruitment dynamics for six fish species in the Everglades by addressing the impact of hydrology on dispersal, growth, and mortality. Rapid colonization resulted in higher recruitment for strong dispersing species. For poor dispersing species, the age/size when M’/G’=1 acted as an important indicator of recruitment success. Results determined that hydrology not only alters movement but delays the onset of an important recruitment indicator (age/size when M’/G’=1).
