Elastic interactions within representative volume elements are studied using integral equations. This approach allows one to examine various aspects related to particle-particle and particle-surface elastic interactions and derive various approximations for the effective stiffness. We introduce a new approximation, in which particle-particle but not particle-surface elastic interactions are neglected, and examine its relationships to Mori-Tanaka, Ponte Castaneda-Willis, and Kanaun-Levin approximations.

This is a joint work with George J. Weng of Rutgers University.

About the Speaker

G. J. Rodin is Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin, where he has been on the faculty since 1986.  He is also affiliated with the Institute for Computational Engineering and Science.  Prof. Rodin studied engineering at Saint-Petersburg Technical University in Russia and earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986.  Prof. Rodin was awarded Research Initiation Grant by the National Science Foundation in 1987, ALCOA Foundation Awards in 1991 and 1993, and was chosen as a Temple Foundation Fellow in 1995.  He has held visiting positions at Ecole Normale Superior (France), Ecole Polytechnique (France), University of Stuttgart (Germany), and University of Liverpool (UK) where he was named Marie Curie Scholar.  Prof. Rodin's primary research interests are in mechanics of materials.  He is particularly interested in various aspects of multi-scale modeling of complex materials, ranging from atomistic to geological scales.  He has published papers in the leading journals in mechanics of materials, computational and applied mathematics, chemical physics, and fluid mechanics.  He has delivered close to two hundred invited lectures worldwide.
