George Yu is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the former Director of the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies. Since he joined the University of Illinois in 1961, Professor Yu has promoted academic discourse on Chinese politics on campus and beyond, across various topics of American studies in China, political order in China, cooperative interactions between China and Africa, among others. In this special lecture, he develops his perspectives on the role of China in Africa, how China's vital interests in the continent have been developed since its first formal presence in 1955 and through the Cold War and recent economic development in China.
