Abstract: Languages with rich number morphology on nouns and/or pronouns sometimes make a distinction between paucal number (more than one but small in number) and greater paucal number (more than one, slightly more in number than paucal, but not many) (see Corbett 2000). I claim that this distinction is at stake in the Spanish determiner system too, more precisely, that the indefinite determiner algún is not singular in number but paucal, and that what looks like its plural counterpart, algunos, is not plural but greater paucal. I implement the claim using Harbour’s (2014) theory of number. Several welcome consequences of this proposal for the morpho-semantics of these determiners, as well as some more general consequences of the approach, are explored.
