"The Composite Holy Man"

A recurrent convention in the literature on early Christian saints is an account of how an individual becomes saintly by adopting the virtues witnessed in others.  This lecture traces the origin and development of this model of saintly character formation, uses it to read a couple of non-hagiographic poetic texts, and considers its pertinence to more recent discussions of character.
