The "As You Are" Body Image Event will be held at the Women's Resources Center on Thursday, November 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. It will consist of an art exhibition, social art project, resource table, and panel discussion. My goal is to plan an event that will encourage body image awareness and empowerment through different mediums of understanding.
The art exhibition will feature pieces reflecting societal constructions of "ideal" human forms and the impact these constructions have on our cultural and society. The social art project will be similar to that of Candy Chang's "Before I Die Wall" (http://candychang.com/before-i-die-in-nola/). There will be 2 long sheets of butcher paper and markers to allow the audience to creatively finish the sentences "I love my..." and "I am...". The resource table will be a place where the audience can find supportive places to continue their path of self-awareness. As for the panel discussion, I am inviting 6-8 diverse speakers. The discussion will be facilitated by a set list of questions posed by me and the audience. I will also be taking requests for questions the night of the event (we'll have a box so people can put them in anonymously) and on the Facebook event page. There will be refreshments available.
