In 1939, Leopold Senghor proudly declared that emotions were African while reason belonged to Europe. He was roundly denounced by nationalists who refused to be branded as irrational. In the post-colonial era, should we try to rescue Senghor's basic insight that culture weighs heavily on thinking? This talk discusses emotions in the African literary imagination.
