Challenging the view that the diffusion of Islamic law was primarily an urban phenomenon in the early modern Sahara and Sahel, Prof. Warscheid will discuss how the adoption of Islam in Mauritania, Mali, and southern Algeria from the 15th century onwards developed traditions of sophisticated legal scholarship and a rich literary heritage.
