Title: Towards a new Radiology: a story of Hot Augusts in Champaign, GRAPPA, MR Fingerprinting, Mixed Reality and AI
Abstract: In this lecture, I hope to describe different how different technology components are combining to dramatically change the field of medical imaging, resulting in significant improvements in human healthcare. I’ll describe how my particularly long journey started at the University of Illinois and how the environment there provided fertile ground for research in several disparate fields. We will start with recent developments in fast and quantitative MRI. I’ll particularly focus on the development of parallel imaging methods, like GRAPPA, and quantitative methods like MR Fingerprinting. All of these methods can be traced back to mathematical concepts originally developed at UIUC. I’ll also discuss how we came to work in the field of mixed reality and how our recent work in AI will impact all of medical imaging.
Bio: Mark A. Griswold, PhD is the Pavey Family Professor of Innovative Imaging, Professor of Radiology, Director of MRI Research at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, with secondary appointments in Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Dr. Griswold received his BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois and his PhD in Physics from the University of Wurzburg, Germany. Dr. Griswold has been involved in various topics to improve the speed, efficiency and clinical impact of MRI. Dr. Griswold is also the faculty director of the Interactive Commons (IC) at CWRU with a focus on the use of mixed reality in education. In particular, Dr. Griswold has led the development of the HoloAnatomy® Software Suite which has been adopted by more than 25 medical schools for the teaching of anatomy.
