Realizing junction-less quantum devices using the kinetic inductance of superconducting niobium titanium nitride (NbTiN)

Abstract: It has been shown that thin nitride films can be patterned into superconducting circuits which act as excellent parametric amplifiers operating near the quantum limit. Rather than the typically used Josephson junction, these circuits rely on an intrinsic nonlinearity provided by the kinetic inductance of the superconducting material that defines the circuit. The success of these materials in the amplifier regime indicates that these films could also be patterned into circuits capable of generating quantum states. This is what we would like to do with NbTiN. In this talk we will discuss the current limitations of these films, theoretically proposed devices that could be within reach, and efforts to expand our understanding of these films to push limitations and inform device design.

Student Information: Sam Cross is a 4th year physics graduate student working for Wolfgang Pfaff on the realization of quantum devices using the functionalities of high-Tc superconductors.
