The gener8tor Carbon Removal Accelerator empowers early-stage startups pioneering new technologies that capture, store, sequester, or utilize carbon. This new accelerator program is made possible through The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management and the Direct Air Capture (DAC) Pre-Commercial Energy Program for Innovation Clusters (EPIC) Prize. The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, a part of Prairie Research Institute (PRI) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, is a leader in direct air capture (DAC) research. They focus on developing efficient and affordable capture methods, scaling them up for real-world use, and ensuring responsible implementation. Their expertise and contributions have led them to win 3 DOE Phase 1 Feasibility Studies to develop DAC Hubs. ISTC integrates applied research, technical assistance, and information services to advance efforts in the areas of decarbonization; pollution prevention; water and energy conservation; and materials recycling and beneficial reuse.

The DOE's carbon removal program tackles climate change by aiming to remove gigatons of CO2 from the air by 2050. It funds research and development across various methods like direct air capture, biomass storage, and ocean-based solutions. Through initiatives like the CDR Purchase Pilot Prize and Regional DAC Hubs, they invest in making these technologies affordable and widespread, ultimately aiming for net-zero emissions in the US by 2050.
