This workshop seeks to clarify the different types of diverse students in our classrooms (ESL students, international students, native speakers with multiple language backgrounds) and how these labels affect the student's performance in the classroom. We will focus particularly on writing issues, based on students performance in freshman composition classrooms. We will also discuss ways instructors can take a global approach to teaching, rather than expect that students from diverse backgrounds adapt to monolithic academic models. Ultimately, this session concerns ways in which the strengths of multilingual students can be used as valuable resources in classroom teaching.
